BODY WEIGHT AND SHAPE, FOR MEN

Maasai people in East Africa, traditionally, ate an appalling diet consisting mostly of blood and milk. Why didn't they all drop dead of heart disease? Research over forty years ago by Professor Kurt Biss (whom we have known since 1939!) found a situation even more remarkable than first appeared. Maasai men living their traditional life had extremely little heart or arterial disease and their blood cholesterol levels were much lower than very fit young men in the West. Their relatives who moved into the towns and ate more balanced diets did have cardiovascular disease, whilst their blood cholesterol was more like what we in Western societies think of as normal. The difference simply was that a Maasai herdsman, living out in the untamed savannah to keep hyenas away from his cattle, might be walking or running up to fifty miles per day! His brother or cousin in the town, poor as he might be, took a bus to work. Let's say that again, up to fifty miles! Exercise is protective!

We cannot all return to the primitive life and wouldn't want to if we could. Can anything else be done apart from that? Is it worth making the effort?

Step 1: Appreciate what the Maasai have going for them. Have no doubt that they can pull the birds. For the most part women really admire the slim, muscular body shape, and if women are not your bag, the same applies to other men also. So, not only for long life, also for the Good Life, fitness and body image are worth the effort.

Step 2: Consider what can be done without returning to the Stone Age. Exercise must be included in the package though with a better diet you will not need so much as the Maasai. The chief question is what additional help we can give so that exercise is more effective in achieving health and good body shape. Yes, diet will play its part, both quantity and balance. That traditional Maasai diet is in itself so bad that its adverse effects are only overcome by huge amounts of exercise, plus the fact that the food is not particularly attractive and is hard to get (you have to draw blood each day from your cows, for example, using an arrow-head in the neck veins) so that Maasai tribesmen living in the old-fashioned way have a relatively low calorie intake. Now there's a hint about what we have to do!

At VIR we require a full Health Evaluation first: a discount may be given if you have recent test results available. Then we will recommend on diet and activity, and help by provision of support and advice throughout, checking your general health as you progress. Appetite-controlling medicines are available of new kinds that are not dangerous to the heart, also anti-absorption medicines, vitamins, and hormone supplements where testing shows that it is necessary, though in most cases there is no need for any drugs at all.

You may wish to look now at "Simple Simon's Guide to Diet and Nutrition", our hard-hitting, truth-telling guide on such matters, available on this website . Don't expect the usual guff. This is the truth as near as we know it, and may make uncomfortable reading.
